It is situated in the Canadian Rockies astride the Continental Divide along the border of Alberta and British Columbia, Canada. The ice field lies partly in the northwestern end of the Banff National Park, and partly in the southern tip of Jasper National Park. It is 325 square kilometres roughly or 125 sq mi in area, 100 metres or 330 ft to 365 metres or 1,198 ft in depth and has up to 7 metres or 280 in of snowfall per year.

Columbia IcefieldsColumbia Icefield is well known as a surviving remnant of the thick ice mass which once covered most of the mountains of Western Canada. Lying on an elevated, wide plateau, it becomes the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies. Mostly three-quarters of the highest peaks of the park are situated near from the icefield which is ideally placed to catch most of the moisture which Pacific winds carry across the interior o British Columbia. Most of this settling falls as snow up to 7 metres a year.
As more snow falls within a year than can melt in the short summer season, it accumulates. As the time passes, the snow turns into ice and starts to flow outward through the gaps in the mountains surrounding the icefield, which creating some great tongues of ice called glaciers.
